August 20, 2013 (Chinavestor) Emerging market equities plunged in Asia on Wednesday, hurting the Hang Seng Index (INDEXHANGSENG:.HSI) as well as the Shanghai Composite Index (SHA:000001). Fears that Treasuries interest rates will rise thus hurting demand for emerging market investment opportunities were behind the sell-off. Jakarta led the decline and the Hang Seng Index (INDEXHANGSENG:.HSI) fell 493.4 points or 2.2%, the most for August. The sell-off was universal in both Hong Kong and Shanghai where stocks that fell outnumbered those that advanced ten to one in both markets.
