advance5 February 21, 2012 (Chinavestor) Chinese stocks advanced on Tuesday but it wasn't the eye popping rally many hoped for. The Hang Seng Index (INDEXHANGSENG:.HSI) rose a modest 53.9 points or 0.3% after last week's record surge. The Shanghai Composite Index (SHA:000001) advanced 17.8 points or 0.7%. China Telecom (HKG:0728) surged 4.1%, the most among Chinese stocks listed in Hong Kong. China's third largest mobile carrier agreed to sell Apple's iconic iPhone, creating quite a buzz.

Shares of China Telecom (HKG:0728) rose the most among 42 components of the Hang Seng Index (INDEXHANGSENG:.HSI). Also, the stock was the hottest among components of the Xinhua 25 Index, measuring the performance of Hong Kong listed mainland Chinese stocks.

But energy and transportation stocks succumbed to profit taking. CNOOC Ltd. (HKG:0883), China's offshore oil driller, fell 2.9% while China COSCO (HKG:1919), the largest container shipper in the world, declined 2.9%.

The advance was more robust in Shanghai where most components of the Shanghai Composite Index (SHA:000001) ended Tuesday in the black. Real estate, finance stocks advanced on valuation.
