stocksexchange1 July 8, 2010 (Chinavestor) Foreign companies may be allowed to list their shares in Shanghai next year for the first time as the cities continues its bid to become a global financial hub. Shanghai, the world's largest market, has been closed to this point to foreign firms.

HSBC (NYSE:HBC), the largest European bank by market cap, and the London Stock Exchange are among the companies reportedly interested in listing their shares in Shanghai. Earlier this week, a report published by PricewaterhouseCoopers said companies may raise $74 billion through IPO's in Shanghai and Shenzhen this year.

The China Securities Regulatory Commission and the Shanghai stock exchange are in the process of drafting rules that would govern the listings of foreign firms in Shanghai, Bloomberg News reported. Financial services, telecom, consumer goods and manufacturing firms are interested in listing their shares in Shanghai.

Last year, a UBS report said U.S. firms such as Coca-Cola (NYSE:KO), General Electric (NYSE:GE) and Wal-Mart (NYSE:WMT) would be interested in Shanghai listings. All are members of the Dow Jones Industrial Average.
