balance October 21, 2010 (Chinavestor) – Chinese stocks took a breather from their recent bullish ways on Thursday with the Hang Seng posting a meager loss and the Shanghai Composite (SHA:000001) shedding almost 0.7%. Another round of solid earnings news helped boost U.S. stocks. Forty members of the S&P 500 reported results today, helping that index to a small gain. The Dow Jones Industrial Average also booked a small gain as four of its 30 members reported profit results today.

It was a better day for Chinese small-caps than, at least as far as ETFs are concernend. The Guggenheim China SmallCap ETF (NYSE:HAO) gained 0.6% on strong volume while the PowerShares Golden Dragon Halter USX China ETF (NYSE:PGJ) and the iShares/FTSE Xinhua China 25 Index (NYSE:FXI) both dealt with small losses on the day.

Key NASDAQ listed China stocks of the day included Sohu.com (NASDAQ:SOHU), Melco Crown Entertainment (Nasdaq:MPEL) and Baidu (Nasdaq:BIDU). Large cap Ctrip.com (Nasdaq:CTRP) advanced rapidly as well.

Looking at the large-cap winners, China Yuchai International (NYSE:CYD) leads the way with a surge of 11.5% on volume that was better than five times the daily average. CNinsure (Nasdaq:CSIG) followed with a gain of almost 4.7% while Sohu.com (Nasdaq:SOHU) jumped 3.7%. Semiconductor Manufacturing International (NYSE:SMI) was the only other large-cap winner to gain more than 3%.

Melco Crown Entertainment (Nasdaq:MPEL) and Baidu (Nasdaq:BIDU) were the only large-caps to add more than 2% on the day. Ctrip.com (Nasdaq:CTRP) and China Telecom (NYSE:CHA) both added nearly 2%. Sina (Nasaq:SINA) jumped 1.2% and AsiaInfo-Linkage (Nasdaq:ASIA) gained just over 1% to cap the winners.

It was a rough day for commodities names as Sinopec Shanghai Petrochemical (NYSE:SHI) suffered through a 5% loss and Sinopec (NYSE:SNP) gave up 2.3%. Solar names were punished today as well with Suntech Power (NYSE:STP) dropping 3.8%. Trina Solar (NYSE:TSL) lost 3.6% and Yingli Green Energy (NYSE:YGE) also declined by more than 3%.

China Real Estate Investment (Nasdaq:CRIC) dropped 4.4% while Silvercorp Metals shed 2.8%. Huaneng Power (NYSE:HNP) lost just over 2% while Mindray Medical (NYSE:MR) slipped by 1.7% to round out the losers.

It wasn't a very exciting day in terms of big gains for Chinese small-caps. Sutor (Nasdaq:SUTR) was the leader with a gain of just 4.1%. Actions Semiconductor (Nasdaq:ACTS), Jinpan International (NYSE:JST), eLong (Nasdaq:LONG) and Zhongpin (Nasdaq:HOGS) all gained more than 3% on the day. Rino International (Nasdaq:RINO) added 2.7% and Fuqi International (Nasdaq:FUQI) jumped by 2.6%.

China Finance Online (Nasdaq:JRJC) and ChinaCast Education (Nasdaq:CAST) both popped by more than 2%. A-Power Energy Generation (Nasdaq:APWR) is the final winner with a gain of 1.9%.

The losers were a little more problematic today, just look a the loss of almost 11.6% UTStarcom (Nasdaq:UTSI). China Technology Development (Nasdaq:CTDC) dropped almost 8% while China Natural Resources (Nasdaq:CHNR) tumbled by more than 7%. AirMedia (Nasdaq:AMCN) was the only other Chinese small-cap to lose more than 6% and Winner Medical (Nasdaq:WWIN) was the only other Chinese small issue to lose more than 5%.

China Digital TV (NYSE:STV) lost nearly 3% while China Precision Steel (Nasdaq:CPSL), China Infrastructure Investment (Nasdaq:CIIC), China Green Agriculture (NYSE:CGA) and China Medical Technologies (Nasdaq:CMED) all slipped by 2.5%.
