bear_bull September 8, 2010 (Chinavestor) – It was another split decision on both sides of the Pacific as the Shanghai Composite (SHA:000001) slid to a small loss while the Hang Seng ended a five-day winning streak by losing 1.5%. U.S. stocks did their best to recoup some of Tuesday's losses as the Dow Jones almost half a percent. Looking at our trio of China-specific ETFs, the PowerShares Golden Dragon Halter USX China ETF (NYSE:PGJ) finished the day flat and the iShares/FTSE Xinhua China 25 Index (NYSE:FXI) booked a small gain, but the Claymore/AlphaShares China Small-Cap ETF (NYSE:HAO) was again the leader, gaining almost 1.2% to trade above 28% for the first time in several months. The ETF closed just below $28 at $27.97.

Large-caps were once again fairly calm on the day as JA Solar (Nasdaq:JASO) was the only double-digit winner, surging almost 12%. LDK Solar (NYSE:LDK) and Yingli Green Energy (NYSE:YGE) each gained about 3% and Suntech Power (NYSE:STP) added 2.4%, but Trina Solar (NYSE:TSL) slipped by almost 0.7%.

Melco Crown Entertainment (Nasdaq:MPEL added over 5% and City Telecom (Nasdaq:CTEL) popped by 4.1%. Home Inns & Hotels Management (Nasdaq:HMIN) added over 3% while Baidu (Nasdaq:BIDU) booked a gain of over 2%. China Southern Airlines (NYSE:CEA) was up by almost 2% to round out the large-cap winners.

Large-cap losers were easy to deal with today. Synutra International (Nasdaq:SYUT) was the biggest loser, dropping about 3.2% as the bears continue to have their way with that name. Focus Media (Nasdaq:FMCN) followed, tumbling 3%. Shanda Interactive (Nasdaq:SNDA) lost almost 3% as well. Changyou.com (Nasdaq:CYOU) followed with a loss of almost 2.6%.

China Mobile (NYSE:CHL), China's largest mobile phone carrier, slipped just 1.2% on news that Vodafone (NYSE:VOD) sold its 3.2% stake in the Chinese firm. WuXi PharmaTech (NYSE:WX) also gave up 1.2%. Ctrip.com (Nasdaq:CTRP) dipped by almost 1%. While Huaneng Power (NYSE:HNP) and Semiconductor Manufacturing International (NYSE:SMI) round out the losers, each dropping less than 1%.

Looking at the small caps, Qiao Xing Mobile (NYSE:QXM) surged almost 38% on volume of 1.9 million shares compared to average daily trade of less than 38,000 shares on news that Qiao Xing Universal (Nasdaq:XING) will acquire all of the mobile firm's outstanding shares. Winner Medical Group (Nasdaq:WWIN) soared by almost 9.6%. KongZhong (Nasdaq:KONG) added more than 9%.

China Technology (Nasdaq:CTDC) popped by 8.6%. Sinovac Biotech (Nasdaq:SVA) added almost 8% on decent volume. UTStarcom (Nasdaq:UTSI) put in a solid day, gaining 4.66%. China Green Agriculture (NYSE:CGA), China Sunergy (Nasdaq:CSUN), China Sky One Medical (Nasdaq:CSKI) and A-Power Energy Generation (Nasdaq:APWR) all gained well over 2% on the day.

The losers include Qiao Xing Universal (Nasdaq:XING), which slipped 2.38% on the acquisition news. GigaMedia (Nasdaq:GIGM) dropped by 2.4% and WSP Holdings (NYSE:WH) gave up some of yesterday's gains, losing 2.74% on the day. China Medical Technologies (Nasdaq:CMED) lost the same amount.

Wonder Auto Technology (Nasdaq:WATG) gave up almost 3% while Tongxin International (Nasdaq:TXIC) shed more than 3%. China Fire & Security Group (Nasdaq:CFSG) dropped 3.5%. China Integrated Energy (Nasdaq:CBEH) and Fushi Copperweld (Nasdaq:FSIN) each shed nearly 4%. ATA Inc. (Nasdaq:ATAI) was the biggest small-cap loser on the day, giving up just 4%.
