August 27, 2010 (Chinavvestor) – Better than nothing. That might be an appropriate way of describing the action in Chinese stocks on Friday as the Hang Seng fell by just 0.1%, but the Shanghai Composite (SHA:000001) booked a small gain of 0.3%. Better than everything (recently) would describe the Dow's big 1.7% jump on the back of some less bad economic news that the U.S. had been in desperate need of. It was a great day for ETFs that track Chinese large-caps as both the PowerShares Golden Dragon Halter USX China ETF (NYSE:PGJ) and the iShares/FTSE Xinhua China 25 Index (NYSE:FXI) both surged nearly 2%. Small-caps were tame by comparison with the Claymore/AlphaShares China Small-Cap ETF adding just 0.3%.

Searching for notable large-cap losers is a difficult task today and that's a good thing for the bulls. China Eastern Airlines (NYSE:CEA) was the biggest loser, but that stock lost less than 3%. Other losers included China Life Insurance (NYSE:LFC), China Unicom (NYSE:CHU), New Oriental Education (NYSE:EDU), Perfect World (Nasdaq:PWRD) and Shanda Games (Nasdaq:GAME) all lost less than 1% on the day.
Small-caps were fairly tame today, but there were still some nice moves to be had. China Sunergy (Nasdaq:CSUN) jumped 8% on strong volume and no news. GigaMedia (Nasdaq:GIGM) capped an active week by gaining more than 7% while China Housing & Land Development (Nasdaq:CHLN) and Global Sources (Nasdaq:GSOL) each soared more than 6%.
China Fire & Security Group (Nasdaq:CFSG) and Wonder Auto Technology (Nasdaq:WATG) each gained about 5.66%. China Nepstar Chain Drugstore (NYSE:NPD), HQ Sustainable Maritime Industries (NYSE:HQS) and Fuqi International (Nasdaq:FUQI) all added more than 5% and American Dairy (NYSE:ADY) put in a nice performance, gaining nearly 5% on the day.
Small-cap losers weren't too extreme today. Xinhua Sports & Entertainment (Nasdaq:XSEL) led the losers with a drop of almost 10%. Noah Education (NYSE:NED) slipped by more than 5%.
