July 22, 2010 (Chinavestor) – It may be the year of the tiger, but Thursday was the day of the Chinese large-cap, with those stocks surging on the day as the Hang Seng gained 0.5% and the Shanghai Composite Index (SHA:000001) added 1.1%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average surged 2% to more than make up for yesterday's loss. The PowerShares Golden Dragon Halter USX China ETF (NYSE:PGJ) soared 3% while the iShares/FTSE Xinhua China 25 Index (NYSE:FXI) popped by 2.7%. Small-caps shined as well with the Claymore/AlphaShares China Small-Cap ETF (NYSE:HAO) adding almost 3%.
To illustrate just how strong Chinese large-caps were today, we don't have any losers to tell you about. EVERY Chinese ADR with a market cap above $500 million advanced today, led by NetEase.com (Nasdaq:NTES), which was higher by almost 7%. Rivals Giant Interactive (NYSE:GA), Perfect World (Nasdaq:PWRD) and Changyou.com (Nasdaq:CYOU) all gained more than 1%. Commodities names were strong, led by a gain of almost 6% for Yanzhou Coal (NYSE:YZC). Aluminum Corp. of China (NYSE:ACH) surged nearly 5% and Sinopec Shanghai Petrochemical (NYSE:SHI) was higher by 1.6%.
Solar names did well with Suntech Power (NYSE:STP) adding almost 5% while JA Solar (Nasdaq:JASO) added just under 1%. Baidu (Nasdaq:BIDU), China's largest Internet search provider, gained 1.56% after reporting second-quarter results that were ahead of estimates. Melco Crown Entertainment (Nasdaq:MPEL) surged almost 6%. Semiconductor Manufacturing International (NYSE:SMI), Synutra International (Nasdaq:SYUT) and China Unicom (NYSE:CHU) all popped well over 4%. Mindray Medical (NYSE:MR) was another noteworthy winner, adding almost 5% on the day.
Looking at small-caps, we have some losers there, but the losses were tolerable. Biotech names were weak with Sinovac Biotech (Nasdaq:SVA) shedding almost 5% and China-Biotics (Nasdaq:CHBT) losing almost 4%. Gushan Environmental (NYSE:GU) lost 3.13%. Xinyuan Real Estate (NYSE:XIN) and China Architectural Engineering (Nasdaq:CAEI) both lost more than 2%. Noah Education (NYSE:NED), GigaMedia (Nasdaq:GIGM) and ATA Inc. (Nasdaq:ATAI) all lost more than 1% while China Nepstart Chain Drugstore (NYSE:NPD) and The9 Ltd. (Nasdaq:NCTY) each lost almost 1%.
Among the winners, China Grentech (Nasdaq:GRRF) with a gain of 8%. China Technology (Nasdaq:CTDC) had its say in matters, adding over 7%. Winner Medical (Nasdaq:WWIN) was a winner as that name added 6.57%. China Sunergy (Nasdaq:CSUN) surged nearly 6% while Agria (NYSE:GRO), CDC Corp. (Nasdaq:CHINA) and China Housing & Land Development (Nasdaq:CHLN) all gained more than 5%.
China BAK Battery (Nasdaq:CBAK) was higher by 4.9% and UTStarcom (Nasdaq:UTSI) and Cogo Group (Nasdaq:COGO) were both higher by well over 4%.
